How can you prevent your hair from looking brassy, orangey. and banna peel yellow when you lighten i

I have dark hair and I bleach it to a light blond. I found that I need to do two steps in coloring my hair so I don't get that orange-ish look.

If your hair is very dark, you may need to first strip the color out of your hair and then put a color on it as a second step.

I use "Born Blonde" to strip out the dark color....then choose an "ASH" color that I put on after I have striped out the dark color. I use Medium Ash.....it looks very natural, and has no yellow or orange-ish tones to it.

This is more work and more expense, but it does look more natural.

Hair lightens in stages

brown

red

orange red

yellow

pale yellow

You must get to the yellow stage

Then use a tonner

This will prevent brassy ness

Don't go too blonde...if your natural colour is fairly dark you might need to go to a salon. Even if it isn't that might still be the best thing, at least for the first time. Use shampoo/hair products made for dyed hair, and don't spend a lot of time in the sun the first couple days after you've dyed it. And swimming pools do very bad things to dyed blonde hair, so you might want to avoid them.

Absolutely do this--use toner, violet to be specific. There are toner shampoos, toner leave on gels, and toner drops. Go for hair color that has a "V" in the name because that means there's a violet base which neutralizes brassy tones. Always color the midsection of your hair BEFORE the roots and tips because the midsection is the most resistant part of your hair to color. Follow up with lots of deep conditioning to prevent the "blonde frizz" because blonde color is the most damaging to your hair.

i got the perfect stuff for you! get john frieda luminous color glaze. i really don't know what color your hair is but they have it for different shades. i think the sheer blonde would be good for you. either the champagne or the honey to caramel. just follow the instructions and you will notice your hair beautiful! also they have the shampoo and conditioner which help prevent your hair from getting brassy. also any shampoo that is purple for lightning hair will work excellent too.
